AllSides recently asked Americans how they perceive the political bias of content from Associated Press, Breitbart, Washington Post, WIRED, and Washington Times. In Dec. 2024, 761 participants from across the political spectrum participated in a Blind Bias Survey, rating news articles from these outlets without knowing their brand names to avoid any preconceived notions of bias.

In Jan. 2025 and Feb. 2025, AllSides also conducted Editorial Reviews of Washington Post, WIRED, and Washington Times to provide more robust and reliable ratings of these sources. Editorial Reviews consist of a balanced panel of reviewers on the left, center, and right reviewing an outlet for bias. An Editorial Review of Associated Press is planned.

Associated Press Rated Lean Left; AllSides Keeps Left Rating

In the Dec. 2024 Blind Bias Survey, Associated Press was rated Lean Left (-2.03).

Regardless of self-identified political bias or party affiliation, respondents rated Associated Press as Lean Left on average. This result differed from AllSides Media Bias Ratingâ„¢ of Left (-3.10) at the time.

AllSides decided to maintain the Left (-3.10) rating for Associated Press, considering findings from the Oct. 2024 Blind Bias Survey and a November 2024 Editorial Review, which rated it as Left (-3.72) and Lean Left (-2.67), respectively. An additional Editorial Review of Associated Press will occur soon.

Breitbart’s Right Bias Rating Confirmed

In the Dec. 2024 Blind Bias Survey, Breitbart was rated Right (6.49).

Regardless of self-identified political bias or party affiliation, respondents rated Breitbart as Right on average. This result confirmed Breitbart’s AllSides Media Bias Ratingâ„¢ of Right at the time.

Washington Post’s Lean Left Bias Rating Confirmed

In the Dec. 2024 Blind Bias Survey, Washington Post was rated Lean Left (-1.01).

Those who rated their own bias as Left or Lean Left rated Washington Post as Center in the survey, while respondents with a Center, Lean Right or Right bias rated it as Lean Left on average. Democrats rated Washington Post as Center, while Independents and Republicans rated Washington Post as Lean Left.

Similarly, in a Jan. 2025 Small Group Editorial Review, a multipartisan panel rated Washington Post Lean Left (-1.63). The panel identified instances of story choice bias, bias by viewpoint omission or placement, and slant which appeared to appeal to left-leaning perspectives.

Both the Blind Bias Survey and the Editorial Review confirmed Washington Post’s AllSides Media Bias Ratingâ„¢ of Lean Left at the time. However, based on these results, AllSides adjusted its score from -2.20 to -1.63, maintaining the Lean Left rating.

WIRED’s Bias Rating Moved From Center to Left

In the Dec. 2024 Blind Bias Survey, WIRED was rated Center (-0.31).

However, both a Jan. 2025 Small Group Editorial Review and a Feb. 2025 Editorial Review rated WIRED as Left. Based on these findings, AllSides decided on a final rating of Left (-4.07) for WIRED.

While WIRED primarily covers technology and its broader impacts on culture, economics, and politics, the analysis focused on its politically related coverage, which contributed to the final Lean Left rating. The panel identified multiple instances of story choice bias, slant, spin, and sensationalism, which appeared to appeal to left-leaning perspectives.

Washington Times’ Lean Right Bias Confirmed Following Dec. 2024 and Jan. 2025 Reviews

In the Dec. 2024 Blind Bias Survey, Washington Times was rated Center (0.04), conflicting with Washington Times’ AllSides Media Bias Ratingâ„¢ of Lean Right (2.00) at the time.

However, a Jan. 2025 Small Group Editorial Review rated Washington Times as Lean Right (2.57). The panel identified multiple instances of word choice bias, slant, viewpoint omission, and story choice bias which appeared to appeal to right-leaning perspectives.

After considering the results of the Dec. 2024 Blind Bias Survey, the Jan. 2025 Editorial Review, and the 2022 Editorial Review and Blind Bias Survey, the panel decided to uphold the existing AllSides Media Bias Ratingâ„¢ of Lean Right (2.00) for the Washington Times.
