Presidential candidate and House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Eric Swalwell said Tuesday that Democrats are “on that road” to impeachment, adding that “doing nothing is not an option” due to the precedent it sets.

“This president needs to be held accountable and if we do nothing, we do two things. We enable the president, and as the father of a 2-year-old, doing nothing is not an option for someone who continues to act out, but also you set a standard for future presidents that the bar is now lower, and we don’t want either of them,” the California Democrat said during an interview with CNN’s “New Day” show.

While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for her party to slow down impeachment talks, Mr. Swalwell said she hasn’t taken it off the table.

“If you were to contrast what we’re doing with Donald Trump Justice where you just reach a conclusion without any evidence, then yeah I can see how you could say ‘well why aren’t they moving that fast,’ but we don’t move that fast because we still believe in a rule of law and an order of things,” he said.

“We’re going to get this right. I’m confident that he’s going to be removed by the voters in November 2020 or by Congress, but we’re near the end of Donald Trump,” he added.

Mr. Swalwell is one of the almost 20 Democrats currently vying to be the nominee to challenge Mr. Trump in the 2020 election.
