OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to the popularity of DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence styling itself as a rival to ChatGPT.
Altman said that it was "invigorating to have a new competitor," but added that OpenAI's product would still be better.
Newsweek contacted DeepSeek for a response to the comments via email.
Why It Matters
OpenAI and DeepSeek represent two sides of the race to develop artificial intelligence in the U.S. and China respectively. The contest is explicit, with DeepSeek describing itself as "rivaling OpenAI's Model o1," and with Altman aiming to make the U.S. dominant in the AI industry. His statements today are an acknowledgment of an international contest to develop the most-effective AI models.
