President Donald Trump expressed concern over vows made by Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg that they'll donate to any Democratic Party challenger, telling both billionaires Sunday morning they were "laughed at & mocked" by their 2020 Democrat rivals.
Trump attempted to drive a wedge between the billionaires' deep pockets and the Democratic Party after Steyer dropped out of the presidential race Saturday following a poor performance in the South Carolina primary. Bloomberg and Steyer are the top two spenders in the campaign, with the former New York City mayor dropping more than a half-billion dollars of his own money into media ads since entering the race four months ago. Steyer spent more than $22 million in advertising in South Carolina alone and shelled out around $250 million in the wider campaign.
Responding to Steyer dropping out and both billionaires' continued pledges to defeat the president at all cost, Trump tried appealing to them on Twitter Sunday.
