THE QUICK FACTS
- On Tuesday, Michigan congressman Justin Amash announced an exploratory committee to seek the Libertarian nomination for President. This comes two months after Amash stopped actively campaigning for his House seat to consider a presidential run.
- Congressman Amash, who was first elected to Congress in the Tea Party wave in 2010, left the Republican party on July 4th, 2019, becoming an Independent. At the time, he refused to publicly rule out running for president.
- In May 2019, Amash announced his support for impeaching Trump based on the findings of the Mueller report. He later became the only non-Democrat vote in favor of both articles of impeachment.
- The Libertarian nominee for president will be chosen from a total of 60 currently registered candidates at the 2020 Libertarian National Convention from May 21-25 in Austin, TX. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee in 2016, received 3.3% of the popular vote--larger than the 2.1 percentage point difference between Clinton and Trump.
