Veteran baseball announcer Vin Scully is known for some of the most memorable calls in sports history — Kirk Gibson’s game-winning homer in the 1988 World Series, Bill Buckner’s infamous error to let the New York Mets stay alive in the 1986 Fall Classic, to name a few.
But on Friday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ veteran announcer, who’s in his 67th season calling games for the team, turned heads again — and this time with commentary that has little to do with balls and strikes.
“Socialism, failing to work as it always does, this time in Venezuela. You talk about giving everybody something free and all of a sudden there’s no food to eat,” Scully said as Milwaukee third baseman Hernan Perez stood at bat in the sixth inning. “And who do you think is the richest person in Venezuela? The daughter of Hugo Chavez. Hello.”
