This Abridge News topic aggregates four unique arguments on different sides of the debate. Here are the quick facts to get you started:
THE QUICK FACTS
- On Wednesday, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders suspended his presidential campaign. In a live-streamed speech to supporters, Sanders explained: “I cannot in good conscience continue to mount a campaign that cannot win and which would interfere with the important work required of all of us in this difficult hour."
- Sanders announced his 2020 presidential campaign on February 19th, 2019 and ran for 414 days, outlasting almost every other candidate. Until Joe Biden's landslide victory in South Carolina, Sanders led the field, coming in first or a close second in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.
- As of Wednesday, Sanders had gained 914 pledged delegates--over 300 fewer than Biden's. 1,991 delegates are needed to secure the Democratic nomination.
- With no more major challengers, Biden is the de facto Democratic nominee. If he still fails to reach 1,991 delegates, however, then the primary will culminate in a contested convention, which may give delegate-holding candidates like Sanders influence over the party platform. Sanders has said he will remain on the ballot in states that still have primaries.
