The Senate overwhelmingly agreed Thursday to strip the Democrat and Republican National Committees of public funding for their 2012 conventions and put the money toward reducing the national deficit instead.
Lawmakers added the amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, to the farm bill on a 95-4 vote.
Supporters say the parties no longer need public funding for their conventions since they now raise private money to cover most of the bill.
