A Universal Basic Income scheme is a government policy that typically replaces means-tested welfare systems with a single unconditional payment. This idea has a long history; able to trace its origins to various humanist, socialist, and libertarian thinkers over the last several centuries.
In recent years the policy has become more seriously considered as a more effective means of distributing aid to the developing world; as a more efficient means of distributing welfare, and as a means to account for the potential widespread loss of jobs due to advanced automation or other structural changes to developed economies.
