Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has claimed that a potential government shutdown on Saturday will result in Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, air traffic controllers, and border security officials ceasing work, disrupting travel and undermining national security. This is false.
“[L]et me tell you, whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or independent, when you are traveling over these holidays, you may end up with some problems, becuase TSA is federal government, because those that are doing air traffic control to make sure that we’re safe, that’s federal government. If you are concerned about the border, let me tell you, that is also federal government officers,” Rep. Crockett said on MSNBC.
In fact, while many federal government employees are furloughed during shutdowns, “essential” workers continue to perform their duties. This includes TSA officers, air traffic controllers, and border officials, as well as law enforcement, power grid technicians, administrators responsible for ensuring Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid payments are disbursed, and others.
