MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama lawmakers advanced legislation on Thursday that would allow local law enforcement to enforce immigration law, as conservative legislators push for increased alignment with the federal government’s crackdown on immigration. The bill was dubbed ā€œLaken Riley Act,ā€ named after the 22-year-old Augusta University student who was killed last year in Georgia by an undocumented immigrant. President Donald Trump signed a similar law into affect in January that requires the detention of unauthorized immigrants accused of theft and violent crimes.

Two students have been transported to the hospital after a suspected tornado ripped the roof off a school in Alabama. The Dothan Fire Department confirmed in a press release that ā€œa severe weather eventā€ impacted the area surrounding Dothan Preparatory Academy in Dothan at around 12:30 p.m. local time on Monday, March 31, causing damage to the property. ā€œThere have been five reported minor injuries among DPA students. Two of these students have been transported to a local hospital for further evaluation,ā€ the fire department continued in their release. Emergency...

Parents were scrambling to get their children from Dothan Preparatory Academy on Monday after a possible tornado damaged the school and caused damage in nearby areas. Roadways were closed and buses parked after the storm damaged the school’s gymnasium and library. At least five students sustained minor and moderate injuries and police said those injuries were addressed by Dothan Fire, which transported two with injuries to the hospital. Parents had to make plans to pick up students from the Doug Tew Recreation Center, where school officials set up a reunification...

The most recent episode of ā€œAmerican Idolā€ had a few things you might not have expected, such as automotive vandalism and yodeling, for example. Also a glimpse of a previous Alabama contender cruising down the road in Helena. The episode also featured a glimpse of another 2025 contender from Alabama – though, sadly, not her actual audition. This season, producers have been having considerable fun exploring the history of Carrie Underwood, the 2005 winner who has returned to the show as a judge, filling the spot vacated by Katy Perry....

The public library in Fairhope, Alabama — a picturesque city on the shores of Mobile Bay — has found itself in the crosshairs of battles over library content. The Alabama Public Library Service Board of Trustees voted Thursday to withhold state funding from the Fairhope Public Library after complaints from conservative parents about books in the teen section. In the same meeting, the board voted to immediately dismiss the executive director of the state library agency, who had been planning to resign. Board Chairman John Wahl, who is also the...
