Harvey Weinstein's retrial on rape and sexual assault charges is set to begin Wednesday with opening statements. The retrial comes before a Manhattan jury a year after New York's highest state appeals court overturned the disgraced movie mogul's conviction. Weinstein, 73, faces one rape count and two criminal sexual act counts. The Oscar winner, once one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers, has pleaded not guilty and denied ever assaulting anyone or having nonconsensual sex. At the center of the retrial are three women, with two alleging that Weinstein forcibly performed...

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. California's high-speed rail project has solved an issue that could have prevented it from building vital parts of its infrastructure. The City of Millbrae and the California High-Speed Rail Authority reached an agreement on Tuesday, resolving a legal dispute that could have blocked the project from building train stations in the area. Newsweek contacted the California High-Speed Rail Authority for comment outside of regular working hours.

For all the turmoil these days, the U.S. stock market remains extremely attractive to investors around the world, simply because of its sheer size and liquidity. But it’s still quite difficult for investors in other parts of the globe to trade stocks on U.S. exchanges. A San Mateo-based startup called Alpaca has quietly capitalized on that opportunity by offering an API to financial services firms that let them sell trading services to their consumer user bases. Today, Alpaca claims it serves more than 5 million brokerage accounts, and has more...

President Donald Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs are putting many California businesses, jobs and the state budget at risk. They’re affecting not only long-term relationships with trading partners, but an intricate web of ecosystems and supply chains. The California business owners and groups grappling with the tariffs — wine shop owners, winery founders, farmers — say the precise effects on their industries are unclear so far. They hope there will be an upside. But for those who have a broad view of trade, things look grim. The Port of Los Angeles...

As the landscape of cannabis consumption evolves, many individuals, particularly older adults, are exploring ways to harness its therapeutic benefits without experiencing significant psychoactive effects. One approach gaining traction is microdosing—consuming minimal amounts of cannabis to achieve desired outcomes while maintaining daily functionality. Microdosing involves taking small, controlled doses of cannabis, typically ranging from 1 to 5 milligrams of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis.

LOS ANGELES — Jurors convicted a Southern California judge of second-degree murder on Tuesday for fatally shooting his wife while the couple argued and watched television at home. Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, 74, was on trial for the 2023 death of his wife Sheryl, 65, in their Anaheim Hills home. Ferguson took the stand in his own defense, admitting to shooting his wife but saying it was an accident. Jurors reached their decision Tuesday afternoon, a day after deliberations began. After the verdict was read in court,...

The Earthquakes made a move ahead of Wednesday’s MLS transfer deadline to shore up their leaky defense, acquiring left back DeJuan Jones from the Columbus Crew in exchange for general allocation money and an international roster slot. The Quakes will send out $175 in general allocation money for this season and $250,000 in 2026 funds, plus the roster slot for this season. Jones has started three matches and subbed into two more, recording one assist this MLS season. He was not in the Crew’s squad for its most recent match...

Five people were injured when a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Singapore encountered severe turbulence while cruising over the Philippines late last month, a United Airlines spokesperson said Tuesday. United Flight UA1, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying 174 passengers and 14 crew members, was flying at 40,000 feet near Claveria, Philippines, on March 27 when it hit unexpected turbulence, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The flight, operating under registration N27958, continued to Singapore and landed safely three hours later at 7:43 a.m.
