Power was restored to 98.8% of customers early Friday after an island-wide blackout hit Puerto Rico earlier this week, authorities said. More than 1.45 million customers had electricity less than 48 hours after the outage hit, according to Luma Energy, which oversees the transmission and distribution of power on the island. "Although restoration is nearing completion, some customers may continue to experience temporary outages due to limited generation," Luma said.

Luma Energy said 58% of its electricity customers in Puerto Rico now have service following a major outage Wednesday.

The joint venture of Quanta Services and ATCO unit Canadian Utilities operates Puerto Rico's electric grid. Genera PR, a unit of New Fortress Energy, began a 10-year contract to manage the state-run Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority's power plants in 2023.

Crews worked early Thursday morning to restore power in Puerto Rico after yet another entire-island blackout. The outage began past noon on Wednesday and left 1.4 million customers without electricity and 328,000 without water.
