Vermont Senator Peter Welch met Monday with detained Columbia student Mohsen Mahdawi, a green card holder from Palestine who was arrested in Vermont when he appeared for what he was told would be a naturalization test. Ahead of his arrest, Mahdawi helped lead campus protests against Israel’s war on Gaza. Senator Welch, who’s calling for Mahdawi’s release, published a brief interview with Mahdawi recorded inside the Northwest State Correctional Facility. Mohsen Mahdawi: ā€œI want to tell everyone that I feel so loved and so supported. And I am here in...

Federal immigration officers arrested a pro-Palestinian student organizer on Monday. It carries a bit of irony as this person, Mohsen Mahdawi, was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a meeting about obtaining American citizenship. Vermont Democrats have already voiced outrage over Mahdawi’s arrest; his residence is White River Junction. The New York Times has a lengthy piece about this man who is a practicing Buddhist, which partially influenced him to walk away from organizing these pro-terrorist brouhahas, along with being cognizant of his immigration status.

Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Vermont rose last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, increased to 308 in the week ending March 29, up from 294 the week before, the Labor Department said. U.S. unemployment claims dropped to 219,000 last week, down 6,000 claims from 225,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. Kentucky saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 114.9%. Nebraska, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop...

U.S. Homeland Security officials are closing off Canadian access to an unusual library in northern Vermont that straddles the international border. The Haskell Free Library & Opera House's main entrance is in the U.S. town of Derby Line, but for decades Canadians have been allowed to visit the facility through a side entrance from Stanstead, Quebec, without going through border controls. New rules from the U.S. government mean library officials must as of Monday limit access via the Canadian side to staff and people with disabilities, as a prelude to...

The U.S. will limit Canadian access to the library on the border between Vermont and Quebe, where Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made a jibe about Canada becoming the ā€œ51st state.ā€ Almost two months after Noem’s comments at the Haskell Free Library & Opera House, which straddles the border of Derby Line, Vermont, and Stanstead, Quebec, the U.S. government has made the ā€œunilateral decisionā€ to stop allowing Canadians to enter the building from the U.S. side without going through customs, according to library and Stanstead officials, the Boston...

Protesters lined the streets of Waitsfield, Vermont, as Vice President JD Vance arrived for his ski vacation at the Sugarbush Resort this weekend. Protesters held signs expressing anger at the Trump-Vance administration over everything from its attacks on trans rights, the climate and Palestinian rights, as well as the pair’s treatment of Ukrainian President Zelensky and its mass firing of federal workers. Vance and his family reportedly had to move their stay to an ā€œundisclosed locationā€ because of the demonstrations. Several protests were also held at Sugarbush Resort.

A pedestrian was struck by an Amtrak train in South Deerfield and airlifted to the hospital Monday afternoon, officials said. The train was delayed for several hours while local and state law enforcement responded to the incident, a spokesperson for Amtrak said Monday night. The investigation is still ongoing, according to the statement. At 4:10 p.m., a train traveling from Washington, D.C. to St. Albans, Vt., collided with a pedestrian at the Pleasant Street railroad crossing, according to Amtrak and the South Deerfield Fire Department. The victim was transported by...

On a cool morning last November, 800 people gathered before sunrise in a South Burlington hangar to witness the maiden flight of Beta Technologies’ first electric aircraft to be built on its new scaled production line. Kyle Clark, Beta’s enigmatic founder and CEO, piloted the Alia CX300 — one of the startup’s two aircraft models — in a flight that lasted over an hour. As he climbed through clear skies in a ā€œperfectly quiet electric airplane,ā€ he says he felt grateful. ā€œThere’s not a piece in that airplane that we...
