A portion of Interstate 91 in northern Vermont was closed Monday afternoon after police say a U.S. Border Patrol agent was involved in a shooting.

According to Vermont State Police, the shooting occurred at about 3:15 p.m. in Coventry, near the Canadian border. The highway was closed in both directions between exit 27 in Newport and exit 26 in Orleans.

Police have not provided any other information on what occurred. The FBI is leading the investigation.

Drivers are being asked to seek alternate routes as of 5:30 p.m.
