That snapshot, from retailers’ sales in February and payroll tax collections in March, comes as Richmond region businesses that the business group InUnison surveyed during February and March said they’re feeling more cautious about hiring. That’s evident in what InUnison members told the survey about their plans. While 43% said they planned to hire people this year, that’s down from 55% in the 2024 survey. And only 24% are actively hiring. The state, meanwhile, saw an 8% drop in sales tax collections in March compared with March 2024. Those are...

Sitting in your house in your sweats, alone in the dark, is no longer an acceptable way to drink wine. Melissa Stallard, owner of Chez Nous, a wine bar and shop, said, “This is something I thought about for over 10 years — just a place where people can relax and enjoy a little bit of French culture. I’m a big Francophile, of course I’m not French, but I wanted a place where it felt like you were walking down a street in Richmond and you step inside, and you’re...

The city of Richmond wants to ban new tobacco, nicotine and hemp stores from the vast majority of the city. Leaders have developed a plan that would prohibit new stores from opening near homes, schools and day cares. Add up all those spaces, and about 80% of the city would be off limits for new establishments. Jason Amatucci, president of the Virginia Hemp Coalition, said the idea of banning cannabis stores, if they are ever legalized, is misguided. He said people who want cannabis will seek it out on the...
