The Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE), controlled by the entrenched socialist government of Nicolás Maduro, declared him the winner of the July 28 presidential elections amid much national and international criticism accusing the government of election fraud. The elections took place in a climate of relative peace. However, local media reported that a man was killed in the Andean state of Táchira during the vote tabulation at the end of the day. According to the local newspaper La Nación, an alleged group of paramilitaries sympathetic to the regime fired mortars...

Brazil is in negotiations with Mexico and Colombia to publish a joint statement demanding that Venezuela count all votes and release ballot records from each precinct, according to two Brazilian government officials familiar with the matter.

Foreign ministries from the three countries — all led by leftist presidents that have historically maintained close ties to Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro — each issued statements Monday refusing to recognize the outcome of Sunday’s election until Caracas takes steps to ensure the transparency of the process.

The Biden administration was on the defensive Monday over its policy bet that elections in Venezuela would dislodge strongman Nicolás Maduro, a day after he was declared the winner in presidential elections despite several irregularities and polls indicating his defeat. In a call with reporters, senior administration officials fielded questions about what the United States would do next and whether the Biden administration’s negotiations with Maduro, which included lifting some oil sanctions and releasing prisoners, had failed to deliver democratic change in the South American country.

World leaders and electoral observers call for full breakdown of results as opposition claims vote marred by fraud. World leaders and electoral observers are calling on Venezuela to release the complete results of the country’s presidential vote, as President Nicolas Maduro was formally declared the winner of an election that the opposition says was marred by fraud. Few shops were open and public transport was scarce in the normally bustling Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Monday as the National Electoral Council (CNE) said Maduro had secured another six-year term as...

Concerns over the legitimacy of Venezuela's presidential election persist as its entrenched incumbent president and the country’s opposition both claimed victory Monday — prompting foreign nations, including the United States, to hold off on recognizing the results. Election officials declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner over opposition candidate Edmundo González early Monday during a press conference on Venezuelan state television.

The National Electoral Council on Sunday said that President Nicolas Maduro won reelection with 51 percent of the vote and 80 percent of the votes counted. The opposition group Democratic Unitary Platform also claimed victory, and said their candidate Edmundo González was the rightful president. An additional six-year term would be Maduro’s third. Have there been any claims of election interference? A group of nongovernmental organizations earlier this month claimed that Maduro’s government had attempted to quash opposition groups by arresting dozens of campaign workers.

CARACAS, Venezuela — (AP) — Venezuela's electoral body has formally declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the country's disputed presidential election, handing him third six-year term. The move on Monday came one day after the country’s political opposition and its entrenched incumbent both claimed victory in the contest to decide who will take control of an economy recovering from collapse and a population desperate for change.
