Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi won the special election to replace ousted Republican Rep. George Santos of New York on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Suozzi beat Republican nominee Mazi Melesa Pilip 58.7% to 41.3% for New York’s Third Congressional District, which represents part of Long Island, the AP projected at the time of writing. The former congressman previously held Santos’ seat for three terms until he unsuccessfully ran in the Democratic primary for governor in 2022. Ex-Congressman George Santos blamed his former New York Republican House colleagues after for Democrats successfully flipped his old seat on Tuesday. Former Representative Tom Suozzi won the special election for New York's 3rd Congressional District, defeating Republican candidate Mazi Pilip by a comfortable margin on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press. Suozzi previously held the seat between 2017 and 2023 but stepped away for an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2022, when Santos snatched the seat for Republicans by defeating Democratic candidate Robert Zimmerman.

Democrats successfully flipped a GOP congressional seat in New York, fighting off the steady gains that Republicans have made in the district and their immigration attacks amid the state's migrant crisis.

Former U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi won back his House seat in New York's 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mazi Pilip. AP called the race shortly after 10 p.m., with Suozzi receiving 58.7 percent of the vote and Pilip at 41.3 percent. The two were running to fill the vacancy left by expelled Representative George Santos. The race...

Just over a year after George Santos was sworn into office, the Democrat who first opened the alleged fraudster’s path to Congress has successfully won back his old district on Long Island. In a special election held on Tuesday as a snowstorm bore down on the Northeast, former Rep. Tom Suozzi (D) defeated Republican candidate Mazi Pilip, according to projections from the Associated Press and CNN. Suozzi, who represented this Long Island and Queens-based district for three terms before pursuing a failed run for governor in 2022, will return to...

An unusual special election in New York City's suburbs ended Tuesday after a snowstorm hit the district, sending the campaigns into a last-minute rush to get voters to the polls for a race that could be a bellwether in the fight for control of Congress. Former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, faced off with Republican Mazi Pilip, a county lawmaker, in a race for a House seat that became vacant when George Santos was expelled from Congress. Polls closed at 9 p.m. The contest, fought in a district that...

Polls have closed and votes were being tallied in the special election to replace expelled Rep. George Santos in the 3rd Congressional District, after eight weeks of intense campaigning by Democrat Tom Suozzi and Republican Mazi Melesa Pilip — and a last-minute, turnout-disrupting snowstorm. As of 9:30 p.m., with all election districts reporting in the Queens portion of the district, Suozzi was leading Pilip there. But no results were available for Nassau County, home to 80% of district voters. Under a national spotlight not often seen in local races, Suozzi...

NEW YORK — Polls close in a New York special election, where Democrats are aiming to whittle away Republicans’ thin majority in the US House of Representatives to fill the vacancy created by Republican George Santos’ ouster. The first returns showed Tom Suozzi, a Democratic former congressman, county executive and mayor, leading Mazi Melesa Pilip, an Ethiopian-born Republican county legislator who served in the Israeli military, by a two-to-one margin with about 6% of the estimated vote counted, according to Edison Research. The district includes a small corner of New...

Polls have closed in the ultracompetitive special congressional election for former Rep. George Santos’ seat, after a day of voting in snowy, sloppy eastern Queens and Long Island. Tom Suozzi, the Democratic nominee, is seeking to wrest the district back into Democratic hands after the truth-challenged Santos captured the seat in the midterm elections. Suozzi, a centrist who represented the district for three terms before giving it up to run for governor, faces Mazi Melesa Pilip, a Nassau County lawmaker and a figure virtually unknown before the race. The campaign,...

Voters in New York's 3rd Congressional District are electing a new representative to Congress on Tuesday in a special election to fill the vacancy created by the expulsion of now-former Republican Rep. George Santos in December. On the ballot: Republican Mazi Pilip, a Nassau County official who defeated a four-term Democrat for her seat on the county legislature in 2021, and former Democrat Rep. Tom Suozzi, who previously represented NY-03 before he retired to launch a failed bid for governor in 2022. In the race to represent the district comprised...
