A suspected attacker drove a car into a Christmas market in Germany on Friday evening, killing at least two people, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur news agency reported.

Media reports about the number of casualties in Magdeburg, a city in eastern Germany, varied in the immediate aftermath. The Christmas market, a popular kind of holiday destination in many German cities, was closed after the incident, Magdeburg police said on X.

The suspect is a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who moved to Germany in 2006, Tamara Zieschang, the interior minister for the state of Saxony-Anhalt, said at a news conference. He has been practicing medicine in Bernburg, about 23 miles (36 kilometers) south of Magdeburg, she said. “As things stand, he is a lone perpetrator, so that as far as we know there is no further danger to the city,” Saxony-Anhalt’s governor, Reiner Haseloff, told reporters.
