President-elect Donald Trump has his eyes on Canada and keeps coming back to the idea of making it America's 51st state—no matter how many times Canadians tell him there's no chance it'll happen. If it were, it looks like the U.S. economy would benefit. Canada is a vast, resource-rich, and advanced Western economy. However, it also carries some fiscal issues, with high debt and a large deficit, not too dissimilar to the U.S. itself. Moreover, it has an expensive social and welfare system, and free healthcare—things it would be reluctant...

A senior lawmaker in Greenland slammed Donald Trump Jr.'s visit to the sovereign nation, calling it a "staged" event and saying that real Greenlandians don’t want to be taken over by the United States—no matter what Donald Trump and his son say. Trump sent his son to Greenland on Tuesday to meet with local residents and convince them that being taken over by the United States would be really great, trust him! But Greenland parliamentarian Pipaluk Lynge-Rasmussen told Politico Europe that the event was a sham, amounting to nothing more...

President-elect Donald Trump discussed a range of issues during the dinner, and reiterated his desire for the United States to take control of Greenland. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum used sarcasm on Wednesday to counter her American counterpart’s absurd vow to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Sheinbaum, whom Mexican voters elected to be their first woman president in June, proposed renaming North America to “América Mexicana.” “It sounds pretty, no?” she said at a news conference while standing in front of a map of the world in 1607. “Isn’t it true?” Sheinbaum was referring to a founding document from 1814 that referred to the continent as such,...

Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind Ozempic, has responded to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's threat to impose tariffs on Demark over the Greenland territorial dispute. Newsweek has contacted the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Trump transition team via email for comment on the proposed tariffs. Tariffs on Denmark would likely affect Americans' access to most Danish exports. While Trump did not specify the level of tariffs he planned on imposing, significant levies could result in consumer prices skyrocketing for products such as Ozempic.

WASHINGTON — During his first term, Donald Trump toyed with purchasing Greenland. Much of Washington and Europe dismissed the idea at the time as another of the president’s eccentricities. But as he heads back to the White House, Trump is stressing that people should take the idea seriously. And Sen. Ted Cruz agrees. “This is a serious possibility,” the Republican senator said on his podcast published Wednesday. Greenland...

President-elect Donald Trump is serious about trying to acquire Greenland, both to expand America's sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere and as a way to cement his legacy, according to three sources familiar with his thinking. The Republican said Tuesday he would not rule out using military or economic action to acquire the overseas Danish territory after he takes office Jan. 20, startling European allies who are concerned about maintaining the inviolability of borders at a time of increased global volatility. While Trump briefly floated the possibility of acquiring...

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said Russia is closely monitoring the situation, after US President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out military action to take Greenland from Denmark. Peskov said the Arctic was in Russia's "sphere of national and strategic interests and it is interested in peace and stability there". Trump's remarks on Greenland - a largely autonomous Danish territory - have drawn a warning from European leaders. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas has stressed that "we have to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland", and Germany's...
