Civil rights, immigrant advocates sue over Trump birthright citizenship order

WASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Immigrant and civil rights advocates, including the American Civil Liberties Union, filed a lawsuit against a birthright citizenship executive order signed by Republican U.S. President Donald Trump after taking office on Monday.

"Immigrants' rights advocates today sued the Trump administration over its executive order that seeks to strip certain babies born in the United States of their U.S. citizenship," the advocates said in a statement that called the order unconstitutional.

Immigration rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, sued the Trump administration soon after the president signed an executive order on immigration that would end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to mothers who entered illegally or on visas and fathers who aren’t citizens or legal permanent residents.
