Chicago, for good reason, is on high alert to be a target for President Donald Trump’s immigration raids. The Trump administration is clearly setting its ugly promise of mass deportation in motion. On Thursday, an official bragged on social media about using a military-style airplane to deport hundreds of undocumented immigrants who allegedly committed crimes. That same day, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained U.S. citizens and non-citizens in a raid of a seafood distribution business in Newark, New Jersey. One detainee was a U.S. military veteran, according to Newark...

President Donald Trump has pledged to carry out the largest deportation effort in US history, vowing to ultimately deport all of the foreigners living in the country without permission. They are thought to number at least 11 million, which makes their expulsion en masse a colossal undertaking. Soon after taking office on Jan. 20, he issued a series of executive orders and other related directives intended to facilitate the project, which many policy analysts expect to fall short of Trump’s full ambition. Trump has said his administration will first target...

Trump administration clears way for migrant arrests at schools, churches

President Trump has rescinded a Biden-era memo that prevented immigration enforcement officers from arresting migrants at sensitive locations like schools and churches.

We get the latest on how the new policy is playing out amid promised "mass deportations" from NPR's Joel Rose.

Donald Trump’s administration rescinded long-standing policy that prohibits federal immigration authorities from enforcement actions in places like schools, daycare centers, hospitals, churches and other so-called ā€œsensitive areasā€ as the president lays the groundwork for his ā€œmass deportationā€ agenda. ā€œCriminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,ā€ a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement.

The Trump administration will allow federal immigration agents to conduct raids at schools, hospitals and houses of worship, ending a yearslong policy that banned ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, from arresting people at these sites. This all comes as Reuters reports nearly 1,600 Afghan refugees who had been cleared for resettlement in the U.S. have been left in immigration limbo after the Trump administration suspended refugee admissions. Among them are unaccompanied Afghan children hoping to reunite with their families in the U.S., and people who aided the U.S.

The administration has canceled President Joe Biden’s ban on federal immigration agents arresting suspects inside schools, churches, houses of worship, hospitals, shelters, and at events such as weddings, funerals, and public demonstrations and protests. ā€œThis action empowers the brave men and women in CBP and ICE to enforce our immigration laws and catch criminal aliens— including murders [sic] and rapists—who have illegally come into our country.

Donald Trump's new administration has reversed longstanding policies that restricted immigration enforcement at sensitive locations such as schools, churches, and hospitals. This new directive, announced on Tuesday, aims to empower federal immigration officers to arrest migrants at places previously deemed off-limits by guidelines issued over a decade ago. Newsweek has reached out to the Trump White House on Tuesday night for additional comment.

The Trump administration on Tuesday announced that federal immigation enforcement agents could make arrests at or near ā€œsensitiveā€ locations, sparking fears about the impact on New York City public schools. The policy change undid over a decade of precedent that restricted two federal immigration agencies — Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection — from enforcement activity in settings including schools or houses of worship. ā€œThis is the topic of discussion,ā€ said Naveed Hasan, an advocate for immigrant students on a citywide education panel.
