(The Center Square) – Colorado is among states that are suing the Trump administration over the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency’s access to federal payment systems that include private personal information. The U.S. Department of Treasury reportedly gave DOGE, which is headed by billionaire Elon Musk, access to federal payment systems that include personal private information and bank account data.

Nineteen Democratic attorneys general sued President Donald Trump on Friday to stop Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing Treasury Department records that contain sensitive personal data such as Social Security and bank account numbers for millions of Americans. The case, filed in federal court in New York City, alleges the Trump administration allowed Musk’s team access to the Treasury Department’s central payment system in violation of federal law.

“Musk and DOGE have no authority to access Americans’ private information and some of our country’s most sensitive data,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is leading the complaint. “I am taking action to keep our information secure.” The lawsuit seeks to bar “political appointees, special government employees, and any government employee detailed from an agency outside the Treasury Department” from accessing payment data and that any such individuals who’ve been granted that access be required to return the information.

Thirteen attorneys general, including Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. On Wednesday, a US district judge, Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, recommended a compromise in a lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order to stop Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing Americans' sensitive Treasury Department data.
