Nearly 5 million people visit the Grand Canyon each year, but few are aware that the site has been sacred to Indigenous peoples in the region since time immemorial — and that the national park designation of the region essentially kicked them off their homelands a century ago. On Tuesday, President Biden recognized this history by designating the nearly one million-acre region including the Grand Canyon and its surrounding areas as the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument in Arizona. The announcement follows...

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden designated nearly a million acres in northern Arizona as the new Grand Canyon National Monument. He had special praise for the Valley teen who introduced him before his remarks. Maya Tilousi-Lyttle is a high-school student from Cave Creek. She is Havasupai and Hopi. "It is now my honor to introduce a true leader, pursuing environmental justice, President Joe Biden," she said at the ceremony. During her brief speech, she also spoke about her mother’s efforts as a Havasupai tribal leader to protect the Grand Canyon....

President Joe Biden has designated a new national monument designed to preserve Native American cultural sites and prevent new uranium mining on nearly 1 million acres near the Grand Canyon National Park. The Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument will conserve about 1,562 square miles in three separate areas north and south of the Grand Canyon. It's intended to protect thousands of sites considered sacred by the Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Paiute, Navajo, Yavapai-Apache, Zuni and Colorado River Indian tribes, the administration said.

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Utah (Good Things Utah) – Wrap up your summer vacation or head into fall with a visit to beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park. Why? Because, this natural wonder located right in the heart of Utah is celebrating its Centennial this year and has a lot of special events planned for visitors. Bryce Canyon showcases one of the largest and most colorful concentrations of erosional geologic features in the world, including hoodoos, fins, windows, fluted cliffs, bridges, arches, and grottoes—altogether what University of Utah Professor Frederick Pack...

(GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz.) — Declaring it good ā€œnot only for Arizona but for the planet,ā€ President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed a national monument designation for the greater Grand Canyon, turning the decades-long visions of Native American tribes and environmentalists into reality. Coming as Biden is on a three-state Western trip, the move will help preserve about 1,562 square miles (4,046 square kilometers) just to the north and south of Grand Canyon National Park. It encompasses canyons, plateaus and tributaries that feed a range of plants and wildlife,...

TUSAYAN, Ariz. — America’s newest national monument may be in Arizona, but critics argue the Biden administration was out of line and out of touch to create it without first consulting with the Utahns who will be impacted the most. During his visit to the Historic Red Butte Airfield on Tuesday, a few miles south of the Grand Canyon, President Joe Biden designated over 917,000 acres of federal forest and rangelands in northern Arizona as the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni — Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. The...

President Biden mistakenly called the Grand Canyon one of the world’s ā€œnine wondersā€ and ā€œa haven of ironic speciesā€ during a Tuesday speech in Arizona at the start of a swing through the Southwest. ā€œFolks, it’s not hyperbole to suggest that there is no national treasure, none, that is grander than the Grand Canyon,ā€ the 80-year-old said. ā€œThe Grand Canyon — one of the earth’s nine wonders, wonders the world — literally, think of that.ā€ In fact, the 6,000-foot-deep Colorado River gorge is one of the seven wonders of the...
