The major candidates to succeed Kevin McCarthy as US House Speaker will debate Monday on Fox News, an unusually public forum for campaigning in a party leadership election in which only members of Congress vote, a person familiar with plans said. Speaker candidates Steve Scalise, currently the second-ranking House Republican leader, and Jim Jordan, who helped found the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, will both participate, according to the person. So will Kevin Hern, who hasn’t yet announced he will seek the post but has been exploring a candidacy. House Republicans...

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise on Friday highlighted his fundraising prowess as an edge over Rep. Jim Jordan in the speaker’s race, previewing the argument he will make to House Republicans next week. He said the money he brings in will help reelect GOP lawmakers and expand the Republicans’ slim majority. Mr. Scalise, Louisiana Republican, sharpened his message just hours after former President Donald Trump endorsed Mr. Jordan of Ohio, giving him a huge advantage in the speaker race. “There’s a lot of things you have to do as speaker....

By JILL COLVIN and FARNOUSH AMIRI | Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is officially backing Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the pugnacious House Judiciary Committee chairman and longtime Trump defender, to succeed Kevin McCarthy as House speaker. “Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, D.C., representing Ohio’s 4th Congressional District,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site shortly after midnight Friday. “He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”...

Former President Donald Trump essentially threw his hat into the ring to take on a short-term role as speaker of the House of Representatives. With the media already screaming about “chaos” in the House after now-former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted earlier this week, Trump told Fox News that he would accept a short-term role as speaker if necessary should the Republican Party not be able to reach a consensus on who would replace McCarthy. The leading GOP presidential candidate sees himself as a “unifier” for the party —...

Some Montana Republicans and GOP insiders are airing their frustration with Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), who may soon be angling for a promotion after he was one of eight lawmakers who helped topple Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as House speaker earlier this week. The growing angst comes as Rosendale a second run for Senate in Montana, which could buck Republican leaders’ plans to clear the field for their preferred candidate, Bridger Aerospace CEO and former Navy SEAL , to take on vulnerable Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) next year....

Former President Donald Trump formally endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as the next speaker of the House. “Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, D.C., representing Ohio’s 4th Congressional District,” the Republican presidential candidate said in a post on Truth Social. “Respected by all, he is now Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. As President, I had the honor of presenting Jim with our Country’s highest civilian award, The Presidential Medal of Freedom. So much is learned from sports, and Jim...

Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that he would be willing to become speaker of the House “for a short period of time” and serve as a party “unifier” until Republicans settle on their permanent choice.

Trump told Fox News Digital that he would assume the speakership for a “30, 60, or 90-day period … if necessary.”

It marks the third time in two days that Trump has made some sort of reference tying himself to the vacancy for the top spot in the House of Representatives, after the ouster of ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Tuesday.

On Wednesday Trump…

Donald Trump has declared that if needed, he would consider serving as Speaker of the House for a “short period of time” as Republicans work to elect a new House Speaker to replace Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted Tuesday. Multiple outlets previously reported the former president was mulling a trip to the Capitol ahead of a vote, amid calls from loyalists within the lower chamber. A source familiar with Trump’s recent private discussions told Rolling Stone that Trump has said that he’s open to the possibility of a speakership run....

Who better than former President Donald Trump to fill the vacant House speaker's seat — at least in the short term — Rep. Greg Steube told Newsmax. "How awesome would it be for President Trump to be the leader of the House and negotiate with Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden spending policies from a conservative majority House?" Stuebe, R-Fla., said Thursday on "Eric Bolling The Balance." "I can't think of somebody that would be better to do it." Trump, who is running for a second term in the White House...

This week, Emily Bazelon, John Dickerson, and David Plotz discuss the now-former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and the for-now Republican Matt Gaetz; the Supreme Court’s new term; and crime in America. Here are some notes and references from this week’s show: Marianna Sotomayor, Leigh Ann Caldwell, and Colby Itkowitz for The Washington Post: “Fight for speakership begins as House reels from McCarthy ouster” David Leonhardt for The New York Times: “America’s Political Turmoil” Matt Ford for The New Republic: “The Supreme Court Eyes Its Next Big Power Grab”...
