SANDUSKY — The Juneteenth National Independence Day marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned that they had been freed two years earlier by the Emancipation Proclamation. Many people celebrate Juneteenth in different ways, from festivals to historical celebrations, remembering those who fought for freedom. Today in Clyde, Ohio, a former enslaved African American named Peter Pointz was honored with a headstone 120 years after his death.

Northbound traffic on Interstate 5 was heavily backed up near the San Diego County Fair on Wednesday evening as fairgoers flocked to the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Juneteenth. Traffic was slowed even into the single digits around 6 p.m. from Vista Sorrento Parkway exit to the Via De La Valle exit, according to SigAlert. Compounding the traffic, a hit-and-run crash on I-5 north was partially blocking the off-ramp at Via...

SALT LAKE CITY — Messages of hope and freedom were the themes Wednesday morning as community members gathered on the steps of the Utah State Capitol to celebrate Juneteenth, a federally recognized holiday since 2021. “It's a celebration for all Americans to recognize the progress that U.S. has made,” said Cleopatra Louise Balfour, the celebration’s organizer. “But also reflect on what can we do next? And what next steps do we have to do in order to continue and to have that more perfect union?” According to the National History...

A historian and son of a historian, that bothered Davies, who told people at the CMU and city of Mt. Pleasant’s Juneteenth celebration at Island Park...
