Alaska high school students walk out of class to protest Gov. Dunleavy’s education veto

High schoolers from Ketchikan to Utqiagvik walked out of class on Thursday morning to protest Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s veto of a wide-ranging education bill that included an historic increase to education funding.

Their midday walkout was a cry for increased state education funding.

Students at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé gathered outside and began to chant “Fund our future! Fund our future!” Then, with a roar of approval, they decided to walk to the Capitol building.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Students in Alaska’s capital walked out of school Thursday and marched through the halls of the statehouse to protest Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s latest education veto and the Legislature’s failure to override it.

Hundreds of Alaska students participate in statewide walkout protesting flat school funding and education bill veto

Hundreds of high schoolers across Alaska participated in an organized walkout Thursday in protest of the Legislature’s recent failure to override Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s veto of an education bill. The bill would have included a historic increase in funding for the state’s schools. Outside Eagle River High School in the Anchorage School District, more than 100 students — many wearing red and waving signs — stood outside in the blustering snow for nearly a whole class period chanting “Fund our education!” and “Save our arts, save our sports!” Similar protests...
