President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday after experiencing symptoms “including… rhinorrhea (runny nose) and non-productive cough, with general malaise,” his Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reported.

Key Details: Biden was due to speak at the UnidosUS Annual Conference in Las Vegas when the group’s CEO announced onstage that the President had tested positive. Jean-Pierre later confirmed the test result and said that Biden had canceled his remaining schedule to head to his vacation home in Delaware, where he will self-isolate and “carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.” She added that the President’s pulse oximetry readings were 97%, within the normal range for a healthy person.

For Context: The positive test result constrains Biden’s ability to campaign at a crucial time, with the Republican National Convention underway in Milwaukee; it may also intensify the debate within the Democratic party over whether Biden should drop out of the presidential race.

How the Media Covered It: Many articles across the spectrum highlighted that Biden canceled his campaign events and tied in recent calls from lawmakers for him to drop out of the race. A headline from Newsweek (Center bias) said that Biden “suddenly” canceled a speech; a headline from New York Post (Lean Right) said he “hastily” returned to his vacation home in Delaware.

President Joe Biden suddenly canceled an appearance at an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, after testing positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Biden was set to speak at the UnidosUS Annual Conference on Wednesday, drawing more than 1,500 Latino advocates in leaders in Nevada, a crucial swing state in the 2024 presidential race. The speech comes as Biden has been trying to rally his supporters around him as Democrats in Congress call for him to resign from the campaign.

Facing calls to bow out of the presidential race, President Joe Biden was primed Wednesday to speak to a usually supportive audience of Latino leaders and community organizers, but minutes before his speech, it was announced that he had tested positive for Covid.

Biden’s appearance at the UnidosUS conference in Las Vegas was already delayed when Janet Murguía, the group's president, looking a little teary-eyed, appeared onstage and announced that the president had called her to say that he could not make it.

LAS VEGAS — President Biden tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday and abruptly boarded Air Force One to return to his vacation home in Delaware to recuperate — after glad-handing while experiencing what his doctor described as respiratory symptoms and “general malaise.”

The 81-year-old president told reporters “I feel good” as he emerged — without a mask to protect others — from the presidential limo and walked up the stairs of the jet at Harry Reid International Airport.
