Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the state will carry out a manual hand recount of ballots cast in the 2020 presidential election amid allegations of voter fraud and election irregularities. Currently, former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by 14,000 votes. Raffensperger said Georgia will work with county officials to carry out the recount before the state’s Nov. 20 deadline. The recount comes after Trump's campaign and Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) asked the state do a full hand recount because of the small margin between the candidates.
The story received coverage across the political spectrum; news outlets on all sides tended to analyze what the recount could mean for the election outcome. Some outlets on the left and the right noted that Raffensperger is a Republican.
