Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate. The official announcement is expected to be made later today.

Key Details: Walz, a longtime National Guard member and former teacher and coach, is 60 years old and in his second gubernatorial term. His plainspoken manner could help Harris in Minnesota and the neighboring battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin.

For Context: Walz is a popular governor, and was a Congressman for Minnesota's 1st Congressional District for 10 years. His appeal in Minnesota could help Harris capture rural voters. He caught national attention when he called the Republican ticket "weird" - a line of attack picked up and used by national Democrats. However, his reluctance in sending in the National Guard after the George Floyd riots, and numerous pandemic fraud cases in Minnesota may be politically exploited by Republicans.

How The Media Covered It: Politico (Lean Left bias) noted that Democrats took full control of Minnesota state government in 2023, and Democrats hope to do the same thing nationally. Fox News (Right bias) noted that Walz can help bring in campaign cash as chair of the Democratic Governors Association as well as showcase a number of progressive policy victories in Minnesota, including gun control, legalizing recreational marijuana, and protecting abortion rights.

Kamala Harris will name Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, according to three people familiar with the decision granted anonymity because the announcement is not yet public.

By choosing Walz, Harris is elevating a Midwestern governor, veteran and former schoolteacher to help shore up support among blue-collar, white voters in the Rust Belt.

Walz, 60, led a progressive overhaul of Minnesota during his second term as governor, when Democrats took full control of state government in 2023 — a template for what Democrats hope to do nationally.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's presidential nominee, on Tuesday named Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate as she faces off against former President Trump in the 2024 election, according to the Associated Press.

The naming of the 60-year-old Walz was not a shocker, as his name was instantly thought to be in contention in the two weeks since Harris succeeded President Biden as the party's standard-bearer.

Vice President Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) to be her running mate as she heads toward a November faceoff against former President Trump, according to two sources familiar.

Walz, 60, emerged as a dark horse contender for the No. 2 slot as chatter over other high-profile names, in particular Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (D), dominated the early portion of the veepstakes.

Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) to be her running mate, fewer than 100 days before the 2024 election and four years to the week that President Joe Biden tapped her to become his No. 2.
