A speech from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) this week led some Republicans to call for her deportation.

Different Translations: Omar, a native of Somalia, delivered the speech in Arabic to a group of her constituents. One translation of her comments seen over 7 million times on X suggested Omar said she is "here to protect the interest of Somalia from inside the U.S. system."  Other translations suggested she instead told the crowd that "the woman you sent to Congress is aware of you and has the same interest as you."

Key Quotes: Omar called the widely-circulated translation "slanted" and "completely off." Republicans including Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called for her expulsion from Congress and deportation, saying she pledged to protect Somalian interests over U.S. interests.

How the Media Covered It: Right-rated sources covered Omar's comments much more prominently than left- or center-rated sources did. Many framed Omar's comments as the latest example of her spreading anti-American sentiment. Conversely, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune (Lean Left bias) said Omar is "facing scrutiny and criticism from Republicans based on a flawed translation" of the speech.
