The man suspected of killing at least 18 people and injuring 13 in mass shootings in Maine was found dead, the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
The Details: Robert Card, 40, is reportedly an Army reservist who was committed to a mental health facility this past summer after complaining of voices in his head and threatening to shoot up a local National Guard base. Officials previously said Card was a trained firearms instructor but later said that was not the case. Police initially said as many as 60 people were injured, including some who were hurt in stampedes while trying to flee, but authorities later said only 13 were injured.
For Context: The shooting is the worst in Maine's history and one of the worst in U.S. history. There were 29 homicides in Maine all of last year, and Maine ranks 37th in firearm mortality rate among the 50 U.S. states. The state doesn’t require permits to carry guns.
How the Media Covered it: Sources across the spectrum covered the news as their biggest story Thursday. Some left-rated sources like NPR, the New York Times, and the Associated Press (both Lean Left bias) mentioned Lewiston's diversity. The AP noted that the city's "Somali population, which numbers in the thousands, has changed the demographics of the once overwhelmingly white mill city into one of the most diverse in northern New England." Few other sources, if any, mentioned similar context. Updated 10/27/23 at 10:15 p.m. ET
