A 3-year-old migrant girl riding a bus carrying asylum seekers from Texas to Chicago died Thursday in Southern Illinois, authorities said.

The girl died at a hospital in Marion County, an official for the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed to CBS News. She was believed to be traveling with her mother and father. She was not identified. 

The girl was on a bus which had originated from the Texas border town of Brownsville, both the Illinois health official and the Texas Division of Emergency Management confirmed.

A 3-year-old girl from Venezuela being transported to Chicago from Texas by bus with other migrants died at a local Illinois hospital after showing signs of illness, the Texas Department of Emergency Management said on Friday.

"Once the child presented with health concerns, the bus pulled over and security personnel on board called 9-1-1 for emergency attention," the TDEM said in a written statement.

A 3-year-old child died on a bus of migrants headed to Chicago from Texas, state officials confirmed.

The youngster, who was traveling with his parents, died in Marion County in southern Illinois — about 90 minutes east of St. Louis, Missouri, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

It’s not clear where the family was originally from or how the child died.
