The White House said Thursday that President Joe Biden is tracking the school shooting at Perry, Iowa, and called on Congress to do more to pass gun control.

“Our hearts break for the families of the victims in yet another act of senseless gun violence,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Senior White House staff is in touch with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynold’s, R, office and federal officials are working with local law enforcement in their investigation, Jean-Pierre said.

Few political groups in U.S. history have seen a collapse as swift and dramatic as the National Rifle Association.

A California law that would have banned the carrying of guns in most public places as of Jan. 1 was temporarily blocked by a federal judge on Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney of the Central District of California wrote in his preliminary injunction that the law would "unconstitutionally deprive" concealed carry permit holders "of their constitutional right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense."

The California law, Carney wrote, "is sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court."

Legendary "Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill demanded an "assault weapons" ban along with the passing of red-flag laws in a video to victims of gun violence.

Hamill sent in a video to the 11th Annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence, which was hosted by the Newtown Action Alliance. The alliance is a "national grassroots group formed after the Sandy Hook shooting to bring about legislative & cultural changes" related to gun violence.

A majority of Supreme Court justices leaned toward upholding a federal law criminalizing gun possession for people under domestic violence restraining orders during oral arguments Tuesday.

The case follows several landmark Supreme Court decisions that expanded gun rights over the past 15 years, with the dispute marking the justices’ first plenary Second Amendment case since they established a new legal test last year.

Zackey Rahimi pulled a gun on his ex-girlfriend in a parking lot and shot at a witness who saw them arguing, prompting a Texas family court to issue a protective order in 2020 temporarily forbidding him from possessing firearms. 

With the nation reeling from the deadliest mass shooting of the year, the Supreme Court this week will hash out a Second Amendment dispute that could have enormous consequences for victims of domestic violence.

On Tuesday, the court will hear oral arguments about a law banning people who are subject to a domestic violence restraining order from owning a gun. Studies indicate that women are five times more likely to die from domestic violence if a gun is present.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will weigh the first test of its new Second Amendment precedent that modern gun laws must be rooted in regulations from the founding era.

The justices will review a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit that utilized a new test established in Justice Clarence Thomas's 6-3 ruling in New York Rifle & Pistol Assn. v. Bruen last year, which determines whether gun control laws are constitutional based on the nation's "historical tradition of firearm regulation."

Robert R. Card II, 40, of Bowdoin, is the primary person of interest in the largest mass shooting in Maine’s history, according to the Maine Information and Analysis Center, the intel unit of the Maine State Police.

Police began receiving calls about an active shooter incident in Lewiston at 6:56 pm Wednesday.

Media reports indicate there are 22 people dead and several dozen more injured, though police officials were reluctant Wednesday evening to confirm those numbers.
