Elliott Investment Management Ltd., which is in the middle of an activist campaign at BP Plc, has taken a short position equivalent to 0.5% of shares in London-based peer Shell Plc. The short position, included in data published by the UK Financial Conduct Authority, is part of Elliott’s global hedging program, a person with knowledge of the matter said. The hedge fund has taken a large stake in BP, so short positions in other oil companies could help offset the risk of share moves driven by external factors, such as...

Leonardo DiCaprio is Donald Trump’s worst nightmare in One Battle After Another. The first full trailer dropped for One Battle After Another, a black comedy about Bob Ferguson (DiCaprio), a civil rights activist who joins a revolutionary group to fight against a white supremacist and fascist government. Despite his political aims, Bob is somewhat of a loser. His mother-in-law despises him, his comrades want to get rid of him, and he wanders about town in a plaid bathrobe and a sad beanie. But when Bob’s daughter gets kidnapped by an...

WASHINGTON — A group of progressive U.S. House Democrats on Tuesday rebuked the detainment by immigration authorities of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil and demanded that he be released from a Louisiana detention center. At a press conference steps outside the U.S. Capitol, Reps. Delia Ramirez of Illinois, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Pramila Jayapal of Washington state and Greg Casar of Texas argued that Khalil’s First Amendment rights were violated, as the Syria-born lawful permanent resident appeared to be targeted for his activism and not any immigration violations.

The allegation comes in the latest government court filing in Khalil's case. Mahmoud Khalil speaks to members of media about the Revolt for Rafah encampment at Columbia University during the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in Gaza, in New York City, June 1, 2024. One of the co-directors of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land has been beaten and detained, according to his fellow filmmaker. Israeli director Yuval Abraham claimed on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday that a group of settlers had beaten Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, who was later detained by members of the Israeli military. ā€œHe has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called, and took him,ā€ Abraham wrote. The Associated Press has additionally cited members of the activist group Center for Jewish Nonviolence, which said...
