Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) has become the top attack dog for Vice President Harris, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, against GOP vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), ripping his regional rival as a “phony” and not “one of us.”

The barbs between Beshear and Vance, a rising GOP star recently chosen as former President Trump’s running mate, come amid chatter about who could become Harris’s vice presidential choice.

The race to be Kamala Harris’ running mate has already started.

Moments after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential contest and endorsed his vice president on Sunday, speculation began swirling over who would be Kamala Harris’ running mate. Some Democrats started floating their preferred picks. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, for instance, “would be an excellent choice” to share the ticket, said Philadelphia Democratic Party chair and former Rep. Bob Brady.

Vice President Kamala Harris is now the most likely replacement for President Joe Biden after he dropped out of the 2024 race Sunday and endorsed her as the Democratic nominee—triggering a rushed competition among the Democratic Party’s rising stars to become her running mate.

Names commonly floated as replacements for Biden at the top of the ticket, mostly governors who served as surrogates for the Biden-Harris campaign and who have high approval ratings in their home states, would appear most likely to be top contenders for her running mate.

After President Joe Biden announced that he would suspend his reelection campaign, his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him has propelled her to being the most likely Democratic nominee. Now, the question is who her running mate will be.

Democrats will retain control of the Virginia state Senate and flipped the state House of Delegates from Republicans, according to Associated Press projections, despite GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin's attempts to win total GOP control of the state legislature.

The AP projects at least 21 Democrats have been elected to the state Senate and 51 Democrats have been elected to the state House of Delegates. It's unclear how strong the Democratic majority will be in each chamber.

Democrats saw a successful Election Night on Tuesday, scoring wins in a number of competitive contests. 

In deep-red Kentucky, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear sailed to reelection, while in Virginia Democrats flipped control of the House of Delegates and maintained control of the state Senate. 

Abortion rights advocates also saw a number of wins, most notably in Ohio, where voters chose to enshrine abortion protections. 

Ohio voters decided to codify reproductive freedom into the state constitution on Tuesday in a monumental win for abortion rights supporters.

Issue 1, also known as the Right to Make Reproductive Decisions Including Abortion Initiative, will add language to the Ohio Constitution declaring that anyone in the state has a right to “make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions,” including decisions about abortion care, contraception, miscarriage care and fertility treatment.

In its latest TV ad attacking Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, the conservative super PAC School Freedom Fund falsely claims that Beshear’s decision to release some prisoners early during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed a man convicted of sodomizing a child to “roam free.”

Although the TV ad, which began airing on Sept. 12, claims Beshear “released” James Hamlin “back into the community within a year,” Hamlin was never released, and he is currently serving a 25-year sentence in prison.
