Belgium has a new government. All it took was seven months of negotiation â€” which by Belgian standards is breakneck speed. New Prime Minister Bart De Wever had previously served as mayor of Antwerp from 2013, besides leading his N-VA party for the last two decades. An experienced and formidable politician, it’s surprising it’s taken him this long to lead his country.

May 7 (Reuters) - Brazil's bid to host the 2027 Women's World Cup scored higher than its rival, a joint bid from Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, in a FIFA's evaluation report released on Tuesday. The world soccer governing body bid report came ahead of the vote at the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok on May 17, which will decide where the next Women's World Cup will be held. Last week, Mexico and the United States withdrew from the 2027 race to focus their efforts on hosting the 2031 tournament. Based...

Two Swedish nationals were shot dead in Brussels on Monday night and another person was wounded in an attack that is being investigated as apparent terrorism.

Belgian authorities said that the person responsible for the attack said on social media that he was inspired by the Islamic State militant group and that he was possibly motivated to attack Swedish people.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooter had been confronted by police or was in custody.

BELGIUM, Wis. — A paddle boarder has gone missing at Harrington Beach State Park in Belgium, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office. The paddle boarder had gone to the state park around 2:30 p.m. to paddle board on Lake Michigan and has not been heard from since. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said the missing paddle boarder is a 49-year-old woman who was last seen wearing a green one-piece swimsuit and a black life jacket. Her paddle board is white and blue. The sheriff's office said search efforts are...

Firefighters were dispatched to the historic Lake Church Inn Tavern and Grill in the town of Belgium on Tuesday evening as a fire demolished the structure. Deputies responded at approximately 5:37 p.m. to the historic building on County Road D to find black smoke showing from the exterior, according to an Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office news release. Firefighters from 22 departments responded. They extinguished the fire shortly after midnight. All employees and patrons of the tavern were evacuated. No injuries were reported, although one employee was evaluated on scene for...

Confidence among Belgian businesses improved for the fourth month in a row in March, boosted by demand-driven optimism in the services sector. The business confidence index stood at minus 7.6 in March, from minus 12.8 in February, data from the National Bank of Belgium showed Friday, beating expectations of minus 13.0 from economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. Confidence rose across all categories polled by the bank's monthly survey--business-related services, manufacturing, building and trade.

Belgium's notoriously messy political system is giving the EU a real headache in the way it doles out recovery fund cash.

In a story that embraces accusations of blackmail, a Flemish liberal prime minister, a French-speaking Socialist pensions minister, the mayor of an old industrial city and a workers' party that's not even in government, the country is at serious risk of missing out on €4.5 billion in EU grants.

A suspect in the Brussels suicide attacks was shot Friday as police carried out a major sweep in the district of the Belgian capital where investigators say the attackers hid and built their bombs, according to two people familiar with the operation.
