Beto O'Rourke called on President Biden to confront Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday in an op-ed for The New York Times and demanded he "stop this madness" at the southern border. 

O'Rourke, who lost to Abbott in the Texas gubernatorial race in November, said it was time for Biden to "step up." 

"It’s on Mr. Biden to stop this madness. In fact, promoting a humane immigration and asylum system is exactly what Mr. Biden promised to do when he ran for office," he wrote, condemning Abbott's border security measures.

Texas has around 250 miles of border wall with Mexico, but it seems like the state’s most impenetrable barrier is the one keeping Beto O’Rourke out of statewide office.

At his first public rally since being subpoenaed by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, former President Donald Trump on Saturday complained again about that panel's investigation and did not indicate whether he'll comply with the demand to turn over documents and testify.

Why it matters: It's a strong hint of his intentions for 2024 amid speculation he may announce his election plans in November.

If he does announce a run in 2024, it could set up a rematch against President Biden, who said in an interview on Saturday that he intends to seek a second term but he had not made a formal decision yet.

Beating Gov. Greg Abbott would be only the beginning of Beto O’Rourke’s challenges. In a state where Republicans will likely maintain control of the Legislature and all, or a majority, of statewide offices, the proud Democrat would face an avalanche of resistance from across the aisle while trying to deliver on campaign promises.

O’Rourke says it’s a position he knows well.

Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a third term, and Beto O’Rourke, the Democrat trying to unseat him in November, faced off on Friday night in their only scheduled debate and sparred over the major issues in the race, from immigration to gun policies to the reliability of Texas’ power grid since a February 2021 winter storm left millions without power or heat for days.
