Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun faced bipartisan heat Tuesday as he sat for his first congressional testimony nearly six months after the door plug of a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew off during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

Calhoun, who announced in March he was stepping down at the end of the year, sought to assure senators his company was serious about improving its safety and quality practices amid ongoing investigations by the Justice Department and federal regulators.

Outgoing Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun began his testimony before Senate lawmakers on Tuesday by addressing the loved ones of passengers who were killed in crashes involving the aerospace manufacturer's planes, as the company faces alleged safety concerns over its practices.

"Before I begin my opening remarks, I would like to speak directly to those who lost loved ones on Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302," Calhoun said in his prepared testimony before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Friday it is investigating the use of titanium for components in some Boeing and Airbus jets, as the material was possibly sold with false documentation verifying its authenticity.

The investigation was announced after a New York Times report Friday, which indicated that Spirit AeroSystems, which provides fuselages for Boeing and wings for Airbus and the FAA, used falsified documents.

Federal Aviation Administration chief Mike Whitaker said his agency is partly responsible for the safety problems at Boeing, admitting that it had been “too hands off” in its oversight of the troubled aircraft manufacturer.

Social media went ablaze on Friday, after an X account posted video of an Air Canada flight appearing to catch on fire.

Air Canada recently addressed concerns about the flight, AC 872, which departed from Toronto en route to Paris on June 5. Officials said that the Boeing 777 aircraft carried 389 passengers and 13 crew members.

The video, which was shot by an onlooker on the runway, showed the aircraft ascending hundreds of feet in the air while flames began sparking near its engine. The plane landed soon after.

Boeing’s Starliner capsule, carrying a pair of NASA astronauts, docked with the International Space Station Thursday, completing the first leg of an important test flight after several of its thrusters went offline, forcing a dramatic, last-minute scramble to troubleshoot the issue.

The third time proved to be the charm for NASA and Boeing, which successfully launched two astronauts into space Wednesday morning from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Liftoff, which was scheduled for 10:52 a.m., occurred without a hitch. It is Boeing's first piloted test flight. 

The launch of Boeing’s Starliner, which aimed to lift off on its crewed maiden voyage Saturday, has been scrubbed.

The new spacecraft was expected to lift off atop an Atlas V rocket at 12:25 p.m. ET from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carrying veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams.

Boeing will reportedly blow through billions more dollars than expected to course correct after a series of financial hits. The company said that its bottom line is hurting as the company navigates an ongoing crisis related to the safety of its planes and its ability to manufacture them. On Thursday, May 23, Boeing announced that it took a nearly $4 billion hit during Q2 of 2024.
