Senate Republicans scored a win over their House counterparts in the early morning hours of Friday, officially passing their preferred budget resolution to tackle some of President Trump's priorities, such as securing the southern border. 

Senate Republicans adopted a narrower budget proposal focused on defense, border security and energy priorities after a marathon series of votes that stretched into the early hours of Friday. 

Senate Republicans took their first step Friday toward securing new funding for  border security and the military, after Democrats forced GOP lawmakers to take uncomfortable amendment votes all night on hotly contested issues on Capitol Hill.

A federal judge in Austin on Thursday halted a new state law that would allow Texas police to arrest people suspected of crossing the Texas-Mexico border illegally.

The law, Senate Bill 4, was scheduled to take effect Tuesday. U.S. District Judge David Ezra issued a preliminary injunction that will keep it from being enforced while a court battle continues playing out. Texas is being sued by the federal government and several immigration advocacy organizations. Texas appealed the ruling to the conservative 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Senate Republicans voted Wednesday against advancing a bipartisan border security deal that was part of a larger emergency foreign aid package to fund the war in Ukraine, Israel and Indo-Pacific security.

A motion to proceed to the package failed by a vote of 49-50, with most of the Senate GOP conference voting against it. Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), James Lankford (Okla.) and Mitt Romney (Utah) voted to advance the measure.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas pushed back Sunday on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s recent remarks that President Joe Biden should use more executive authority to take action on the southern border.
