Media Look Away from Kavanaugh Attempted Assassination Plot

The California man who was arrested outside of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh home last week was indicted by a federal jury for on a charge of attempted assassination.

Nicholas John Roske, 26, of Simi Valley, was found outside of Kavanaugh’s Maryland home with a gun, knife and pepper spray. He told police that he was planning to kill the justice, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

A California man who was arrested near U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s residence has been indicted for attempted murder of the justice.

A federal grand jury returned an indictment on Wednesday against Nicholas John Roske, a 26-year-old Simi Valley, California resident, after he allegedly traveled to Maryland to kill Kavanaugh.

Montgomery County police arrested Roske last week after he called the county’s Emergency Communications Center saying he was having suicidal thoughts, had a firearm and came to Kavanaugh’s residence to kill him.

A California man accused of flying across the country with plans to break into Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh’s home to assassinate him was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury, officials said.

The single count of attempting to kill a U.S. judge added new details about what authorities say Nicholas Roske, 26, had with him when he arrived via taxi cab to the conservative justice’s home just after 1 a.m. in Chevy Chase, Md., last week.

The House passed a bill Tuesday to expand Supreme Court Police protection to justices' families, one week after a man was charged for attempted murder of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Why it matters: After the leak of the Supreme Court draft document indicating the court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade, protests outside the homes of conservative Supreme Court justices have prompted calls for increased security.

Nicholas Roske, who authorities say plotted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, texted his sister before abandoning his plans and calling 911, police said.

Roske was carrying a gun, ammunition, a knife, pepper spray, a screwdriver, zip ties, and other gear when he was arrested by Montgomery County Police Department officers Wednesday morning near Kavanaugh’s Maryland home, according to a criminal complaint.

Both sides stress the seriousness of violence against judges.

The FBI on Wednesday raided the Simi Valley, California, home of Nicholas John Roske, the man charged with attempted murder after he told police he planned to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, according to CBS Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old is facing up to 20 years in federal prison and is currently in federal custody.

Neighbors told CBS Los Angeles it was surprising to hear about Mr. Roske’s arrest.\

“They were always nice people so it’s a surprise more than anything,” neighbor Zach Quadri said.

Shortly after the draft opinion overturning women’s constitutional right to an abortion in the United States was leaked, activists began showing up outside the homes of Supreme Court justices. On many nights since, protesters have marched and chanted along the tree-lined street in suburban Maryland where Justice Brett Kavanaugh and his family reside.
