Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, died Sunday at her home in Utah at the age of 49.

Love's family announced her death Sunday night on social media, saying she was "in her home surrounded by family" when she died.

"With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today," Love's family said in a statement, shared on both X and Facebook.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s call Friday to require alcohol labels warning of cancer risk will likely face strong resistance in Congress, which would have to pass a law to require the labels.

The alcohol industry fiercely opposes labeling as well as stricter guidance around consumption — the government currently recommends men consume no more than two drinks per day and women no more than one — and has cultivated support among lawmakers through an expensive lobbying and political operation.

The U.S. surgeon general said alcoholic beverages should carry cancer warnings to increase awareness that the drinks are a leading cause of preventable cancers.

An act of Congress would be required to change the existing warning labels on bottles of beer, wine and liquor. Today, federal rules require only a warning against drunken driving and drinking while pregnant, as well as a general warning that alcohol “may cause health problems.”

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Friday recommended that Congress act to put warning labels on alcohol products and put out a report linking drinking to seven different cancers.

Dr. Murthy’s report linked alcohol consumption to a higher chance of developing mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx, liver and colorectal cancers, as well as breast cancer in women.

Pharmaceutical giants Moderna and Merck announced promising results from a clinical trial testing a combined treatment of an mRNA vaccine and immunotherapy for skin cancer. Melanoma patients who received monthly mRNA vaccines and Merck’s Keytruda immunotherapy had lower chances of cancer recurrence and spread, as well as higher survival rates, than those who received Keytruda alone.

U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, announced Sunday night that she is being treated for pancreatic cancer, but assured her constituents that she will soon be back at full strength.

Jackson Lee, 74, has been representing Texas' 18th congressional district for 30 years.

"My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis for pancreatic cancer," Jackson Lee said in a statement. "I am currently undergoing treatment to battle this disease that impacts tens of thousands of Americans every year."
