A study launched by the U.S. Air Force’s Global Strike Command detected unsafe levels of a potential carcinogen at two facilities at a missile base in Montana, a release said Monday.

A team of bioenvironmental experts have detected unsafe levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at two locations at Malmstrom AFB, Montana, an active U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile base, after officials launched an investigation to address cancer concerns by missile community members, according to a release from the Air Force Global Strike Command Public Affairs office.

Unsafe levels of a carcinogen have been discovered at a nuclear missile base in Montana after the area experienced a spike in cancer case numbers, the Air Force Global Strike Command announced Monday.

A carcinogen is a “substance, organism or agent capable of causing cancer,” a category that includes naturally occurring things like UV rays or those created by human production, like cigarette smoke, according to the National Human Genome Research Institute.

Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday it's offering up to $8.9 billion to resolve lawsuits accusing the company of selling baby powder that caused cancer — an allegation that J&J has repeatedly denied.

Why it matters: J&J faces tens of thousands of lawsuits from people and their survivors related to the company's talc-based powder.

Driving the news: J&J disclosed the offer Tuesday in connection with its decision to re-file its subsidiary LTL Management in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee of Michigan announced in a statement on Friday that he has been “diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a serious but curable form of cancer.”

The congressman said a “very small tumor” was found in one of his tonsils and he will undergo surgery “to remove the cancer” in a few weeks. Doctors have outlined a timeframe of a few weeks for recovery from surgery, the statement said.

“The prognosis after surgery and treatment is excellent,” Kildee said. “I am going to get through this. I’m going to beat cancer.”

A skin lesion removed from President Biden's chest last month was cancerous, the White House announced Friday.

Driving the news: All cancerous tissue was successfully removed during the president’s routine physical on Feb. 16 and the president does not need further treatment, physician Kevin O’Connor said in a letter.

"The site of the biopsy has healed nicely and the President will continue dermatologic surveillance as part of his ongoing comprehensive healthcare," O’Connor added.

Death rates from cancer have been falling over the past two decades, particularly sharply in recent years, the group's annual Cancer Progress Report found. As a result, there are now more than 18 million cancer survivors in the U.S. — up from 3 million in 1971.

President Biden on Monday will appoint Dr. Renee Wegrzyn, an experienced biotechnology professional, to lead an agency created in March to “push the limits” of medical health research and innovation.

Mr. Biden will detail Dr. Wegrzyn’s role as the inaugural director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, in a speech about his cancer moonshot initiative from Boston. The agency’s portfolio and budget will be focused in part on building programs and technologies that detect, prevent and treat diseases like cancer.

President Joe Biden on Monday appointed longtime biologist and former government scientist Renee Wegrzyn as the first director of the nascent Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health.

Biden’s announcement comes as ARPA-H advocates debate where the multibillion-dollar agency should be headquartered and which elusive disease areas should be prioritized. The president officially launched the agency in March with $1 billion in initial funding allotted by Congress, but the search for its inaugural director has taken months.
