Cuba said late on Saturday it had thwarted a terrorist plot hatched in neighboring south Florida, according to a report broadcast on state-run media, after a man allegedly arrived on the island by jetski to commit acts of violence.

The resulting investigation, which state-run media said was still underway, alleged the plot was tied to at least two groups, Nueva Nacion Cubana and La Nueva Nacion Cubana en Armas, which Cuba has labeled as terrorist entities.

Reuters was unable to contact either of the groups late on Saturday.

Two storms were intensifying Monday as the Atlantic hurricane season was getting into full swing.  Tropical Storm Idalia was off the coast of Cuba on a potential track to come ashore as a major hurricane in the southern U.S., the National Hurricane Center said.

At a Monday morning news conference, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told residents to prepare for "major impacts" on the Gulf coast.

"We do expect Hurricane Idalia to be a major hurricane that will strike the state of Florida," he said.  

The American nurse and her child who were kidnapped from a clinic in Haiti last month have been released, the Christian non-profit affiliated with the woman’s husband said Wednesday.

“It is with a heart of gratitude and immense joy that we at El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of our staff member and friend, Alix Dorsainvil, and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince, Haiti,” the group wrote.

“Today we are praising God for answered prayer!”

An American nurse and her young child were kidnapped in Haiti on Thursday morning, the faith-based organization her husband runs said.

Alix Dorsainvil and the child, who was not named, were abducted from a Christian campus near Port au Prince, the country’s capital, while conducting community ministry services, according to El Roi Haiti.

The conditions surrounding the pair’s kidnapping were not shared, but the US State Department said it was working toward their safe return.

An American nurse and her daughter have been abducted in Haiti, in the latest kidnapping episode to draw international notice, as a resurgence of violence grips the capital, Port-au-Prince.

In a brief statement on Saturday, El Roi Haiti, a faith-focused humanitarian organization, identified the woman as Alix Dorsainvil, the group’s community nurse and the wife of the group’s director. She and her child were taken from El Roi’s campus near the capital on Thursday, according to the statement.

No further details have been made public.

Both Haitian and U.S. authorities are investigating the abduction, but no information has been publicly released on who abducted her, what they want, or what it will take to free her.
