Pope Francis marked one week in the hospital on Friday as he continues to fight pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection.

The 88-year-old pontiff has shown some improvement, the Vatican reported, but doctors caution that recovery may take time.

Francis' health has been a persistent concern throughout his papacy, particularly given his history of respiratory issues. The latest hospitalization has renewed speculation over whether the pontiff might consider stepping down, following the precedent set by Pope Benedict XVI.

U.S. President Joe Biden accepted an invitation to visit Pope Francis next month and discuss efforts to advance peace, the White House announced on Thursday. 

Biden, the country’s second Catholic president, is set to travel to Rome from Jan. 9–12 at Pope Francis’ invitation. His audience with Pope Francis is set for Jan. 10 and will focus on efforts to advance peace around the world.

Super Bowl champion kicker Harrison Butker took aim at President Biden in his commencement address at Benedictine College in Kansas on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs players specifically pointed to Biden’s "delusional" stance on abortion as a member of the Catholic faith.

"He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I’m sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice," he said, via OutKick.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker waged a series of attacks against President Biden’s leadership in a recent commencement speech, criticizing the president’s policies on abortion, gender ideology and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a commencement speech last Saturday at Benedictine College — a Catholic liberal arts college in Kansas — Butker claimed the negative parts of society in recent years can be blamed on “bad leaders who don’t stay in their lanes.”

Butker targeted Biden’s support of abortion rights and railed at “degenerate cultural values,” “dangerous gender ideologies,” and the “tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion” on a platform he said was given to him by God.

Commencement ceremonies are underway at the nation’s Catholic colleges and universities, many of which are annually highlighted in the National Catholic Register’s “Catholic Identity College Guide.”

Notable speakers include Cardinal Stephen Chow at Boston College on May 20 and “The Bible in a Year” and “The Catechism in a Year” podcast host Father Mike Schmitz, who serves as chaplain at the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s Newman Center and who spoke to Ave Maria University’s Class of 2024 on May 4.
