Kamala Harris told migrants ā€œdo not comeā€ to the US, but at least 8 million came anyway.

In perhaps her most famous speech as vice president, which she made in June 2021 after she was given responsibility for securing the US border, Harris tried to convince migrants to stop flooding into the US in the wake of President Biden’s 2020 election victory.

ā€œI want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border, do not come. Do not come,ā€ she said.

The United States is going to pay for flights and offer other help to Panama to remove migrants under an agreement signed July 1, as the Central American country’s new president has vowed to shut down the treacherous DariĆ©n Gap used by people traveling north to the United States.

The memorandum of understanding was signed during an official visit headed by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to Panama for the inauguration July 1 of JosĆ© RaĆŗl Mulino, the country’s new president.

The US and Panama have signed an agreement on immigration issues that aims to ā€œclose the passage of illegal migrantsā€ through the DariĆ©n Gap, the Central American government announced Monday.

ā€œIn the agreement signed today by the Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier MartĆnez-Acha and the Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States Alejandro Mayorcas, the US government undertakes to cover the cost of the repatriation of immigrants who enter illegally through DariĆ©n,ā€ the Panama government said in a statement.

Washington is redoubling efforts to disrupt migration routes that lead to the United States, in particular via charter flights to Central America, top diplomat Antony Blinken said at regional talks Tuesday. The secretary of state is leading the US delegation at a meeting in Guatemala of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, a cooperation framework agreed to at a summit in California in 2022. The United States has "stepped up efforts against those preying on vulnerable migrants," notably those flying people from Asia, Africa and elsewhere to Central...

"I saw they had a good future," Alvarado remembers. "It was very lucrative, because the salary of an official was three times the salary of a normal person." He became a police officer in 2003, when he was twenty years old. At the time, Venezuela was ruled by Huge Chavez; Alvarado remembers that Chavez's socialist policies kept individuals from owning two cars but welcomed large American oil and aeronautic companies. In 2013, Chavez died and was replaced by Nicolas Maduro. Alvarado says that right away, the change in leadership began...
