Around 47 children vanish every day in Europe, according to new research by cross-border journalism collective Lost in Europe showing more than 50,000 child migrants went missing after arrival over the past three years.

Data requested from 31 European countries, including Austria, Germany, and Italy, show at least 51,433 unaccompanied refugee minors were registered as missing between 2021 and the end of 2023. The actual figure could be higher due to inadequate documentation of cases, with some countries not collecting data on such children at all.

President Joe Biden denied reports that his administration was in talks to offer immigrant families separated under the Trump administration $450,000 per person as compensation.

ā€œThat’s not going to happen,ā€ Biden told reporters on Wednesday following remarks at the White House.

Biden conceded that reports of such payments could spur further immigration but called the allegation "garbage."

Four families separated at the southern border under former President Donald Trump will be reunited in the United States this week, the Biden administration revealed this week.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas declined to offer the identities of the children, only describing them as from age 3 to ā€œteenagers who have had to live without their parent during their most formative yearsā€ at the time of separation.

The Honduran girl, 7 years old and surrounded by strangers in the pre-dawn darkness, was determined to keep pace with the other migrants headed for the U.S. border.

Her father, she told an Associated Press journalist, had traveled with her by bus for 22 days across Mexico. Then, he went back to their homeland -- but not before he placed her in the hands of a young man who was to help her cross the river into Texas.

ā€œHe just said to go on my own and take care of myself,ā€ she said.

President Joe Biden plans to launch a task force aimed at reuniting migrant families separated by the Trump administration next week, despite initially promising to start this effort on his first day in office, a delay the White House blamed on the Senate not yet confirming a Department of Homeland Security leader.

Biden will sign an executive order creating this task force on Tuesday, one day after Secretary of Homeland Security nominee Alejandro Mayorkas is expected to be confirmed by the Senate, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., ruled on Wednesday that the Trump administration couldn’t immediately expel unaccompanied immigrant children who cross the southern border illegally and deny them a chance to request asylum under a public-health emergency the government declared in March.

Under the order, agents who encounter migrants at the border immediately return them to Mexico without formally deporting them or allowing the migrants to make claims for humanitarian protection.

Donald Trump will leave office on Jan. 20, but the president’s policies—consistently anti-immigrant, anti-science, and intolerant—have left behind thousands of damaged lives: people who found themselves separated from their children or parents, those who have come to fear for their own safety over their gender identity or race or sexual orientation, those who have lived in constant fear of deportation, and those who lost loved ones to an unnecessarily horrific pandemic.
