China announced an 84% tariff against the United States after President Donald Trump raised tariffs against Beijing to 104% on Wednesday. 

“The U.S. escalation of tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake, severely infringing upon China’s legitimate rights and interests, and seriously damaging the multilateral trading system based on rules,” China’s State Council Tariff Commission said in a statement announcing the latest levy, which brings China’s total tariffs on all U.S. imports up to 118%.

Global markets are reeling as the U.S. and China escalate their trade war with a fresh wave of tariffs. China again vowed to “fight to the end” Wednesday in an escalating trade war with the U.S. as it announced it would raise tariffs on American goods to 84% from Thursday.

Beijing also added an array of countermeasures after U.S. President Donald Trump raised the total tariff on imports from China to 104%. Beijing said it was launching an additional suit against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization and placed further restrictions on American companies’ trade with Chinese companies.

China denied any military involvement in Ukraine, after Kyiv said it had captured two Chinese men in the country’s east.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian on Wednesday said China was still trying to confirm with Ukraine details of the capture of the two Chinese citizens who Ukrainian authorities said were fighting for the Russian military.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said two Chinese nationals fighting in the Russian army have been taken prisoner in eastern Ukraine.

Zelensky said Tuesday that Ukrainian forces fighting in the Donetsk region obtained the Chinese nationals’ documents, bank cards and personal data.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he is waiting to hear from China before duties of more than 100% take effect, but other administration officials said they would not prioritize negotiations with the world's No. 2 economic power.

Global markets steadied after days of carnage prompted by Trump's sweeping levies, which have raised fears of recession and upended a global trading order that has been in place for decades. U.S. stocks posted gains after a bruising selloff that has wiped out trillions of dollars since last week.
