President Trump says he agreed to “immediately pause” tariffs on Mexico for a month after a “very friendly” conversation with the country’s president Claudia Sheinbaum.

“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country,” he wrote.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday mocked President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Sheinbaum was speaking to reporters at her daily news conference in front of a large map from 1607 that labeled much of the North American continent “AmĂ©rica Mexicana,” or “Mexican America.” President Claudia Sheinbaum: “The United Nations recognizes the name Gulf of Mexico. But next, why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, doesn’t it? Since 1607, the Constitution of ApatzingĂĄn was Mexican America. So let’s call...

exican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's renewed threats of steep tariffs this week, asserting that migrant caravans are no longer reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.

Her remarks underscored growing tensions as Trump plans to tighten immigration policies and impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican imports. Trump declared that the tariffs would remain in place "until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"

A Nov. 28 Instagram post (direct link, archive link) includes a video of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum speaking in Spanish at a news conference.

“Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican President, has just announced that migrant caravans will no longer be reaching the US border,” reads part of the post, which is a recording of a post first shared on X. “Isn't it strange how fast our problems are resolved when these other countries fear some kind of consequence. TRUMP said he would TARIFF Mexico. That's all it took."

How much power is too much power?

On Sunday, the governing coalition around the National Regeneration Movement — also known as Morena — of President AndrĂ©s Manuel LĂłpez Obrador trounced the opposition alliance in thousands of federal, state and local races in Mexico’s biggest election ever.

Claudia Sheinbaum, Morena’s presidential candidate, secured at least 58.8 percent of the vote, unheard of since the advent of multiparty democracy at the turn of the century, beating her main rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, by a whopping 30 percentage points.

Claudia Sheinbaum has secured the Mexican presidency in a landslide victory to become the country's first female president in its over 200-year history.

The 61-year-old former climate scientist will succeed incumbent president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also of the left-wing Morena party, who has held the office since 2018.

Newsweek has mapped Sheinbaum's victory in three charts.

Mexico's peso tumbled as much as 4.1% against the dollar on Monday and the local stock market fell over 2% after the ruling party scored a surprisingly strong election showing and looked poised for a super-majority that markets fear might bring constitutional change and diminish checks and balances.
