House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) issued a rare joint statement Friday urging Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear “without delay” for a hearing Monday to discuss the weekend’s assassination attempt of former President Trump.

The statement from the top Republican and Democrat on the panel signals that congressional scrutiny of the Secret Service director is bipartisan, even if Republicans have been more vocal and critical of Cheatle.

Donald Trump’s decision to make Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) his running mate is significant not just because he will be his ticket-balancing, ribbon-cutting sidekick, but also because the former president has sharply changed the direction of the party — and is now trying to consolidate it into its enduring future form. Given that Trump is 78, there is also an unusually high risk that Vance will actually end up sitting in the Oval Office sometime in the next four years.

J.D. Vance. On Monday, former President Donald Trump announced freshman Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate for the 2024 election. Before his election to the Senate, Vance was best known as the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” which describes his experience growing up in a poverty-stricken home in Ohio. Vance, 39, is the first millennial nominated to either party's major ticket. If elected, he would become one of the youngest and least experienced vice presidents in U.S. history, with less than two years spent as an elected official.

Patrick Healy, the deputy Opinion editor, hosted an online conversation with the Times Opinion columnists Ross Douthat, David French, Michelle Goldberg and Bret Stephens to discuss Donald Trump’s choice of J.D. Vance as his running mate — why Mr. Trump picked him, how Mr. Vance could help the ticket, what’s surprising and unusual about the vice-presidential nominee, and what if anything worries our columnists about Mr. Vance.

When President Joe Biden delivered his 2023 State of the Union address, Washington was drowning in a sea of red ink. The annual budget deficit was in the process of doubling from $1 trillion to $2 trillion in a single year due to some student-debt cancellation shenanigans. That year's budget deficit would become the largest share of gross domestic product (GDP) in American history outside of wars and recessions.

A man killed at a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday has been identified as 50-year-old former fire chief Corey Comperatore, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Sunday.

Two other Pennsylvania residents were also shot at the rally, Shapiro said. They were identified by Pennsylvania State Police as David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74. They’re both in stable condition.

The person shot and killed at former President Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday was a 50-year-old volunteer firefighter who shielded his family to protect them as gunshots rang out, the state's Governor Josh Shapiro said on Sunday.

The victim was identified as Corey Comperatore, according to his family's posting on Facebook.

"The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most," the victim's sister said in the post on Sunday.
